It's hard to believe that the school year is already winding down. But the telltale signs are there: The nice spring weather is coaxing us away from our favorite cable shows, we're making plans for summer vacation and a sense of apathy is setting in about our classes. It's the home stretch, and we're definitely feeling it.
At the close of each spring, the Church dedicates the month of May to Mary, the mother of God and our own mother. In this issue of the Witness, Jake Spears writes about Our Lady as the ultimate example of a heroine, her perpetual virginity and her role in our lives. Chris Sparks explores the institution of the Eucharist and Colleen Dawson writes about the new springtime in the Church. Marie Burbank interviews Gonzaga graduate and University Ministry staffer Erik Mertens, who exuberantly answers questions about his faith life and gives advice to students. Anthony Lazzaro details the life of St. Catherine of Siena, a Doctor of the Church and papal adviser, and Dr. Alyssa Pitstick gives an enlightening perspective on Christ's death and descent into hell. Inspired by the recent Flannery Lecture, Peter Oven calls the Department of Religious Studies on the carpet while Peter Halloran explores lenten sacrifices through the years. Spencer Hutchins delivers a final address to graduating seniors, reminiscing with them about their years in college and encouraging them to change the world with their degrees and experiences.
It has been a wonderful year working on the Witness. We have been blessed with a phenomenal staff of hard-working students and have received support from many within the Gonzaga community. It is truly an honor to be the Catholic voice on campus and to raise our voice in unison with numerous other Catholic voices at Gonzaga. We are proud of our publication and, even more importantly, we are proud of our Faith; it has been a blessing sharing it with you.
God bless and Mary keep you always. Have a wonderful summer!
Yours in Christ,
