We're well into fall semester. Our midterm grades have arrived, we've dropped the necessary classes and are finally settled into a routine. And although we've at least begun to find our niche in the collegiate world, we can't neglect our duty as Catholic American citizens. Voters across the country are preparing to punch their ballots in the upcoming election, and we should be no exception.

This month, the Witness takes on politics. Christian Congresswoman Cathy McMorris talks about her faith, her family and her political decisions. Katherine Leger writes about St. Thomas More, the ultimate example of a good politician, and Beth Hanson reminds us of our obligations as Catholic voters. Anthony Lazzaro explores the complexities of different political philosophies, and Spencer Hutchins challenges students to move from political indifference to political passion. Also in this month's Witness, Chris Sparks explores the words of Pope Benedict that incited world-wide controversy, and Curt Seidel writes about life in Bishop White Seminary, now in its 51st year.

Here at the Witness, we're ready for the election. We're ready to take on the issues that challenge us in our faith and encourage us to step out and step up in our world. We are not afraid to voice our opinions, to support our Church, to stand by our Holy Father. We are the Catholic voice on campus, and we will not be silent. We are willing to take a hard line on controversial issues, to hold the unpopular views because we have faith in the teachings of the Church that Jesus Christ Himself founded.

On Page 14, you'll find a list of the Catholic and Conservative groups on campus. Get involved, be passionate, stand up for your beliefs. Catholicism isn't a Sunday obligation; it's a way of life, and all of us here at the Witness are dedicated to that.

Yours in Christ,
Katherine Martin
