Position at GU: Professor of History and Director of Catholic Studies
Hometown: Milwaukee, Wis.
Education: B.A., St. Louis University; M. Div., Jesuit School of Theology, Berkeley; STM, Jesuit School of Theology, Berkeley; Ph.D., University of Minnesota.
Hobbies: playing the cello, Irish Dancing, cooking
Why the Jesuits: I was 18 years old; it is so long ago I can't remember.
Favorite class to teach: Western Civilization and Jesuit History
Favorite country to visit: Italy
Why: the art, the food and the people
Funniest moment since becoming a priest: the frozen turkey incident
Dreams and aspirations: to share my love of European and Italian culture with students
Favorite quote: Ignatius' first Principle and Foundation from the Spiritual Exercises (slightly paraphrased) puts things in perspective: "Men and women are created to praise, reverence and serve our Lord and by this means to save their souls. The things on the face of the earth are created to help us move towards the end for which we are created. Therefore we must choose which things help us most towards that end."
One thing you can't live without: Of course this would presume the benefits of our Holy Faith. Other than this, I would say classical music.
