Early this year, His Holiness Benedict XVI addressed a letter to the Jesuit congregation gathered in Rome to elect a new superior general. In it the pope emphasized the importance of a full adherence to Catholic teaching, encouraging the Jesuits "to promote true and healthy Catholic doctrine." Calling fidelity to the Church "a distinctive sign of [the Jesuit] Order," the pope spoke of the need of "transmitting in an integral manner to our contemporaries - distracted by many discordant voices - the unique and immutable message of salvation which is the Gospel, 'not as the word of men, but as it truly is, as the word of God,' which works in those who believe."

There are many different ways to travel from the West Coast to Washington DC. One could take a plane, which would take about a day. One could take a bus or a train, which would probably take about a week. One could drive, which can be done in about three days, or one could walk.

I write this while I'm sitting in a hospital room next to one of my best friends, my mom-she's receiving her second of six chemo treatments. The pump next to me makes repetitive infusion noises- ne-ne-nahhhh, followed by a click- over and over again. Nurses walk busily down the halls, rushing to and from patients' rooms where beeps sound in an awkward symphony.

The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.

"April Showers Bring May Flowers," isn't this often how we feel? We are bogged down academically, physically, spiritually, socially in this hectic time of the year. Graduation approaches for many of our seniors. End-of-the-year assignments seem to pile up on our desks and fill our planners.

There is a transition experienced each year across this country by thousands upon thousands of people. It is something that will inevitably occur to anyone who first enters through the doors of university. And it is, ironically, a truth little pondered by the average undergrad.

The Challenge for Jesuit Universities

Jesuit universities in America are struggling when it comes to the role their Catholic identity should play in university life. This crisis is widespread and can be seen at practically every Jesuit university in the nation. For many years, there has been a strong trend towards secularism in higher education, and Jesuit universities including Gonzaga are no exception in this regard.

Christian music has always received a bad wrap for being superficial, while its writers are panned as talentless. This assumption is unfair. Although at times it is not wholly unfounded.

"Young people can have the hope of a great and fully satisfying love; the hope of a certain position in their profession, or of some success that will prove decisive for the rest of their lives. When these hopes are fulfilled, however, it becomes clear that they were not, in reality, the whole.

Going to confession is awkward. It's incredibly awkward. Every time I plan to go on a Saturday I hope that something comes up that will prevent me from following through. I mean, clearly God would understand that I must watch this basketball game that just happens to have entered its second overtime. Next thing you know…whoops, look at the time! Father has gone on home, and I guess I'll have to wait another week.
